U. S. Government Building and Wake Co. Court House.No. 5071. This Post Office Building was the first to be erected in the South after the Civil War and cost about $400,000. Wake Co. was created in 1771, but the first Court House was not built until 1800. The present structure was erected on teh same site in 1835 and remodeled in 1882 at an expense of $45,000. S. A., No. E-7382. The tiny 5 foot by 6 foot Grimshawes office served from 1878 until 1953. Before becoming the "Grimshawes" post office in 1909, it operated as Whiteside Cove starting in 1878. All of its postmasters were named Grimshawe. After it closed in 1953, the building was moved to the top of Whiteside Mountain to become a ticket office. Simon and engineer Neal A. Melick supervised construction. The exterior of the building is of modernized Colonial Revival design. The lobby has a low relief sculptural panel of a herd of elk. It remains a post office today. It is located at 213 W. Main Street in Surry County at the confluence of the Yadkin River and Elkin Creek. The hotel was erected in 1887 by Edwin W. Grove. The hotel continued in operation until 1972. During the 1980s, the Asheville Housing Authority, a private developer, converted teh old hotel into apartments for senior citizens. Walter P. Taylor completed the Arcade in 1929. At 269,000 square feet, the Arcade established itself as the largest building in the region. When it opened, it became home to a fine collection of local shops and services. In 1942, the Federal Government took over the building to relocate offices displaced in Washington D.C. by departments created ot win World War II. After undergoing extensive renovatins, the Grove Arcade reopened in 2002 as a market with restaurants, fresh and prepared food vendors and craft and specialty shops.
