This brick building was a Colonial Revival design typical of post office construction of the early 1900s. The building's design was prepared under the supervision of government architect James Knox Taylor and was one of many such post offices constructed utilizing this Colonial Revival form and detailing It featured a hipped roof, arched windows and classical detailing around the doors, windows and eaves such as dentils and modillion blocks, By the mid 20th century the building was enlarged with brick additions but it retains its original form and design. Customs House, but it provided space for several other federal offices. Locally, it becme known as the "Custom House." Over the following one hundred years, the U. S. federal building served many purposes, including as the federal courthouse, customs house, and post office. The building underwent a large expansion in 1929-1930, creating a new facade on Front Street. It was place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.</text>

Construction began on the new post office building in the summer of 1916. The land was acquired from a local Attorney W. H. Bobbitt. The new building officially opened in February 1917. Upgrades, remodeling, and an addition were made to the building in 1976.</text>
