During the 1930s the Interbay peninsula (later part of Tampa near the Yacht basin) was so over-run with the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake that o portion of the town came to be known as Rattlesnake Florida. George End started a rattlesnake canning business. In 1939, George talked the Federal Government into opening a post office there and on April 27, 1939, the Rattlesnake Florida Post Office was established. On June 1, 1954 this post office was renamed the Interbay Post Office and was relocated to 3630 Gandy Blvd. This original building was removed in 1955 for construction of the four lane span of the Gandy Bridge. It took some talking, but the people of St. Petersburg finally sold the government on the idea of building an "open air" postoffice, which is sheltered only by a roof, as all boxes, windows and writing tables are in the open. This buyilding was the thrid Post Office building in Yazoo CIyt. It was built in 1910 at the corner of Main Street and Broadway as the result of Senator John Sharpe Williams efforts. Yazoo City had a major fire in 1904 which destroyed the Post ofice building on South Main and most of the downtown area. The Post Office was moved to a location on Mound St from 1904 until 1910. The building was demolished in the early 1960s to make way for the new Delta National Bank. $20,000 was designated for the cost in 1908.
