Description

Key West, Fla. Post Office and Custom House. No. 15236. Made in Germany. Located at 281 Front Street, this was built as a post office, custom house, courthouse and lighthouse quarters. The US District Court for the Southern District of Florida met here until 1932 when the property was transferred to the US Navy. After the Navy declared it surplus, it was abandoned for nearly twenty years. It was purchased by the state of Florida in 1991 and leased to the Key West Art & Historical Society. Post marked Mar. 5 with a two cent stamp. Message on back: March 15, 1912. I need not say where I am. but shall only be here until 11 am then for Missouri by day train no nights if I can help it.
