Description

The Fireproof Building. Meeting St. at Chalmers, Charleston, S. C., No. 69607. The famous Fireproof Building, constructed of steel and stone in 1822 as the county records building, so named because it was Amercia's first attempt at fireproof construction. It was designed by Robert Mills, who later designed the United States Treasury Building and Washington Monument. It is believe to be the oldest fire resistant building in America today. The building has undergone renovation and will reopen in the summer of 2018 as the South Carolina Historical Society Museum, which will include an exhibit on the history of the Fireproof Building.
